Submit to Startup Spotlight

It Asks for a Link From Your Site. 227 of Its Own 363 Link Back With Nofollow.

Written by Submitator, which sells a competing directory-submission service. Every figure below is published with its source and its sample size, so you can check it against their site rather than against us.

Startup Spotlight is a bid-for-rank directory, and it is refreshingly plain about that: "Bid to get listed. Your bid is your rank." Entry is $5 if you read the badge page and $10 if you read the submission page, the top spot was $140 on the day we looked, and "Taking the top spot costs $10 more than the current leader."

Then there is the badge, and the badge is the reason this page exists. It is a snippet you paste on your own site, it links to startupspotlight.co, and their own list of reasons to install it says "Do-follow backlink: The badge includes a do-follow link that boosts your SEO." The link points at them. Meanwhile we fetched all 363 of their listings and 227 of them link back out with rel="noopener nofollow".

A rel value that does not exist

All three badge variants ship the same anchor: "<a href="https://startupspotlight.co/startup/YOUR-STARTUP-SLUG" rel="dofollow" target="_blank">". There is no dofollow value in HTML. A link is followed when it carries no rel at all, so the token does nothing, and the snippet is handed to every founder who installs the badge.

Per startupspotlight.co, its robots.txt, sitemap.xml, /badge, /submit and every listing in its sitemap, all read on 28 August 2026. Domain Rating is Ahrefs' figure via submitator.com/domain-rating-checker; no second provider was queried. Nothing was submitted, no account was created and no payment was made. The sitemap holds 2,693 URLs: 1,029 /compare/ pages, 768 /q/ pages, 363 /startup/ listings, 360 /alternatives/ pages, 129 /founder/ pages, 24 /best/ pages and 9 categories. The link census is not a sample: all 363 listings were fetched with zero errors. 362 carry an outbound anchor to the startup's own domain and all 362 carry utm_source=startupspotlight.co; of those, 227 carry rel="noopener nofollow" and 135 carry rel="noopener". The split is fully predicted by an on-page marker reading "🔗 Do-follow backlink": 136 listings display it, 135 of which carry the followed link and one of which carries no outbound link, and all 227 listings without the marker are nofollow, with no exception in either direction. A rel=canonical is present on 363 of 363. The two prices, the bid mechanics, the five-listing gate and the badge snippets are quoted from the served HTML of /badge and /submit; rel="dofollow" appears three times on /badge, once in each of the dark, gold and light variants. Every listing page also links to nine partner projects named in their footer, among them domain-rating.com, which supplies the DR figure shown in that same footer. Submitator does not submit to Startup Spotlight: our plans are $29 for 30 directories, $49 for 60 and $79 for 100, one-time, chosen by you in the dashboard with each Domain Rating shown, rejections credited back as +1 directory and a 30-day refund policy on the conditions in our terms.

How to submit to Startup Spotlight, step by step

  1. 1

Decide whether $5 or $10 is the number

The badge page says "choose what to pay — from $5, and that sets your rank". The submission page says "Bids start at $10." and the widget will not go lower. Both are live at the same time. Assume $10 and treat the $5 as a page that has not caught up.

  2. 2

Open the five listings it asks for

"Have a look at 5 startups first. A quick browse unlocks your bid." You cannot pay until you have. It is a small ask and it is worth seeing plainly for what it is: five page views to other listings, delivered before the checkout opens.

  3. 3

Pick a bid knowing what it buys

The bid is the rank and nothing else. On our visit $10 landed at #84 and #1 cost $140, and anyone can pass you later for ten dollars more than you paid. If you are buying position, buy it for a moment you care about rather than in general.

  4. 4

Check whether your listing shows the do-follow marker

Their listing pages carry a small "🔗 Do-follow backlink" label, and it is exact: of 363 listings, the 136 that show it are the ones with a followed link, and the 227 without it all carry rel="noopener nofollow". Open your page after publishing and look for that label. It is the only thing that tells you which kind of link you got.

  5. 5

Think twice before pasting the badge

The snippet links from your site to theirs, and their own reason for it is "a do-follow link that boosts your SEO". A link on your page passes value to its destination, and the destination is startupspotlight.co. The badge also carries rel="dofollow", which is not a value HTML recognises, so it does nothing at all.

  6. 6

Know what the badge actually unlocks

"Once your badge is live, we mark your listing ✓ Verified." So the checkmark is not a review outcome, it is confirmation that you installed their link. That is a fair trade if you want the checkmark. It is worth knowing it is a trade.

The badge is the price, not the five dollars

Their badge page runs four reasons to install it: social proof, a do-follow backlink, verified status and referral traffic. The second reads, "The badge includes a do-follow link that boosts your SEO." Read the snippet underneath and the direction is unambiguous. The anchor is "https://startupspotlight.co/startup/YOUR-STARTUP-SLUG", wrapped around their logo, sitting on your page.

A link passes value toward the page it points at. This one points at them, from a footer, a pricing page or an /about, which is exactly where they suggest putting it: "Footer, pricing page, /about — anywhere indexable." Anywhere indexable is the operative phrase, and it is the honest one.

And the token itself does not work. All three variants carry rel="dofollow". HTML has no such value: nofollow, sponsored and ugc exist, and a followed link is simply one with no rel at all. Writing dofollow is a no-op, harmless and inert, and it is in the code every founder who installs the badge copies.

227 of 363 link back with nofollow

We did not sample this one. Every listing in their sitemap, all 363, fetched with zero errors. 362 carry an outbound link to the startup, all of them tagged utm_source=startupspotlight.co. Of those, 227 carry rel="noopener nofollow" and 135 carry rel="noopener".

The split is not random and they do not hide it. Their listing pages show a small label reading "🔗 Do-follow backlink", and the correlation is exact: 136 listings display it, 135 of those carry the followed link and the last has no outbound link at all, and every one of the 227 without the label is nofollow. Not one exception in either direction across the whole catalogue.

Credit for that, genuinely. Most directories in this series make you read their markup to find out what you bought. This one prints it on the page. The number is still the number, though: on the catalogue as it stands, most of what they publish links out with nofollow, while the badge they ask you to install does not.

Your bid is your rank, and five clicks unlock the checkout

"Bid to get listed. Your bid is your rank." Ten dollars placed a listing at #84 on the day we looked, first place was $140, and "Taking the top spot costs $10 more than the current leader." There is no subscription and you can raise your bid whenever you like, which also means anyone can pass you for ten dollars more than you paid.

They defend the model directly: "Bidding keeps the bar high — it filters out spam and low-effort submissions, so every listing here is worth your click." That is an argument worth taking seriously at $10, and it is also a description of a filter made entirely of money.

One more mechanic. Before the checkout opens you must open five other listings: "A quick browse unlocks your bid." It is presented as supporting the community, and it is. It is also five guaranteed page views to existing listings, collected from every founder who wants to pay.

What thirty dollars does without a badge

Their entry is $5 or $10 for one listing whose outbound link is nofollow unless it carries their marker, plus a badge on your site if you want the checkmark. Our $29 covers submissions to thirty directories, each named in your dashboard with its Domain Rating on the card, ticked by you before anything is filed.

We do install badges where a directory requires one, and we keep them live, because that is often the condition of the listing. What we do not do is ask you to put a link to us on your own site. Nine of those thirty sell paid tiers of their own that the plan absorbs, each named with its price on the savings page, over $140 in total.

Their $10: one listing and a badge. Our $29: thirty directories.

One payment, every directory named in your dashboard with its Domain Rating on the card, and you tick the ones you want before anything is filed.

Startup Spotlight review: worth $10 and a badge?

The listing itself is cheap and the mechanism is honest with you in a way most of this series is not. You know it is an auction, you know what rank your money buys, and the page tells you whether your link is followed. At $10 that is a defensible small spend.

The badge is the part to think about, because it inverts the trade. You install a link pointing at them, on an indexable page of your own, in exchange for a checkmark, and the copy selling it calls that a boost to your SEO. It is also written with a rel value that does not exist. Take the listing if you want it. Leave the badge unless the checkmark is worth a link out of your own site.

And keep the scale in view. Ten dollars there is one entry in a 363-listing directory, nofollow by default. Twenty-nine here is thirty directories, and nobody asks you for a link back.

The short version

$10 and a link out. Ours: $29, thirty directories.

A bid-for-rank directory of 363 listings where the badge page says $5 and the submission page says $10, and the badge you are asked to install is a link from your site to theirs carrying rel="dofollow", which is not a value HTML has. Their own link back is nofollow on 227 of the 363 we fetched, and they do label which is which. Our $29 covers thirty directories and asks nothing of your footer. The whole catalog.

FAQ

How much does it cost to submit to Startup Spotlight?

Two pages give two answers. Their badge page says "Fill the form and choose what to pay — from $5, and that sets your rank." Their submission page says "Bids start at $10.", and the bid widget will not go below $10. On the day we checked, $10 placed a listing at #84 and the top spot was priced at $140.

How does Startup Spotlight ranking work?

It is an auction. Their words: "Bid to get listed. Your bid is your rank." and "Taking the top spot costs $10 more than the current leader." One payment, no subscription, and you can bid again to climb. They defend it plainly: "Bidding keeps the bar high — it filters out spam and low-effort submissions, so every listing here is worth your click."

What is the Startup Spotlight badge?

A snippet you paste on your own site. It renders their logo and links back to your listing page, and installing it is what unlocks the verified checkmark: "Once your badge is live, we mark your listing ✓ Verified." There are three variants, dark, gold and light, and all three are the same anchor pointing at startupspotlight.co.

Is the Startup Spotlight badge link dofollow?

The snippet says rel="dofollow", which is not a value HTML has. There is no dofollow token in the specification; a link is followed when it has no rel at all, and writing rel="dofollow" achieves nothing either way. All three badge variants ship with it. The link itself points from your site to theirs, so whatever equity it carries travels in that direction.

Does Startup Spotlight give you a dofollow link back?

Sometimes, and you can see which you got. We fetched all 363 listings with zero errors: 136 display a "🔗 Do-follow backlink" marker and 135 of those carry a followed link, the odd one out having no outbound link at all. The other 227 carry no marker and every one of them links out with rel="noopener nofollow". That is 227 of 363, so most of the catalog is nofollow.

Why does Startup Spotlight make you visit five startups first?

Their submission page gates the bid behind it: "Have a look at 5 startups first. A quick browse unlocks your bid." and "Open any 5 of these to unlock your bid. They're small teams shipping real products — worth a look before you add yours." It is framed as community support, and it is also five page views delivered to existing listings before you are allowed to pay.

How big is Startup Spotlight?

363 startup listings. Their sitemap holds 2,693 URLs in total, and most of it is programmatic: 1,029 comparison pages, 768 question pages and 360 alternatives pages alongside the listings and 129 founder profiles.

Is Startup Spotlight worth $5 or $10?

As a small paid placement, it is cheap and the mechanism is honest about itself: you bid, the bid is the rank, and the listing page tells you whether your link is followed. What is worth pausing on is the badge, because that is the part where you give a link rather than get one, and the copy selling it describes the link as boosting your SEO when it points at them.

Does Submitator submit to Startup Spotlight?

No. Their entry price is $5 or $10 depending which page you read, and it buys one listing whose outbound link is nofollow unless it carries their marker. Our $29 covers submissions to thirty directories, each named in the dashboard with its Domain Rating on the card, ticked by you before anything is filed. $49 covers sixty and $79 a hundred, paid once, with a rejection swapped for another directory and a thirty-day refund window on the conditions in our terms.
