Is a Product Hunt Link Worth Anything for SEO?

/6 min read

Short answer: not as a backlink. When we inspected the HTML of five Product Hunt listings in July 2026, every link pointing to the product's own website carried rel="ugc". That attribute tells Google the link is user-generated, and Google generally does not pass ranking credit through it. A Product Hunt launch is worth a lot. It is just not worth what most people assume it is worth.

Short version

Product Hunt links are tagged ugc, not dofollow. You get traffic, credibility and a page that ranks in Google. You do not get domain authority. For that you need listings that pass a real link.

What we actually found

Most articles on this question just assert an answer. Link policies change quietly, so we checked instead. We pulled the raw, unrewritten HTML for five well-known Product Hunt listings from archive snapshots captured on 23 and 24 July 2026, then read the rel attribute on the outbound link to each product's own domain.

Notionnotion.sonoreferrer noopener ugc
Linearlinear.appnoreferrer noopener ugc
Figmafigma.comnoreferrer noopener ugc
Raycastraycast.comnoreferrer noopener ugc
Cursorcursor.comnoreferrer noopener ugc

Checked 29 July 2026 against archive snapshots taken 23-24 July 2026. Link policies change without announcement, so re-check on a live listing before relying on this.

Two details worth flagging. The word nofollow does appear on a Product Hunt page, but on Product Hunt's own social profile links, not on product links. And there is a tracked redirect variant of the outbound link, routed through a /r/ path, which carries the same attribute. Whichever one a visitor clicks, the signal to Google is the same.

So what does ugc mean

Google introduced the ugc attribute in 2019 to let sites mark links that their users placed rather than their editors chose. Comments, forum posts, profile fields, community listings. Since March 2020 Google treats ugc and nofollow as hints rather than strict instructions, which means it reserves the right to consider them.

Do not build a plan on that. The honest working assumption is that a ugc link passes no ranking credit to your domain. Anyone selling you a Product Hunt launch as a backlink strategy is either not checking or not telling.

What a launch is genuinely worth

Dismissing Product Hunt would be the opposite mistake. The value is real, it just arrives through different channels than link equity:

  • Traffic, concentrated. A good launch day sends more qualified visitors in 24 hours than most startups see in a month, and they are exactly the people who try new tools.
  • Second-order links. Nobody links to you because Product Hunt did. They link because they found you on Product Hunt and then wrote about you. Those are ordinary editorial links, and they are the ones that count.
  • Your listing ranks. The Product Hunt page for your product ranks in Google on its own authority, so it takes up space on your brand searches and on 'alternative to' queries, which are some of the highest-intent searches in software.
  • Credibility you can point at. A Product of the Day badge does not help your rankings, but it does help a stranger decide you are real.

None of that shows up in your backlink profile, and all of it is worth having. If you want the mechanics, our walkthrough of the submission itself covers the form, the timing, the hunter question and the launch-day rhythm.

Where the links actually come from

If the goal is domain rating rather than a spike of visitors, the work looks different and frankly duller. It is directory listings, one form at a time, on sites that still pass a real link. Here is the honest comparison:

A launch day vs a directory listing

FeatureDofollow directory listingProduct Hunt launch
Link attributedofollowrel="ugc"
Passes ranking credit
Traffic shapeSlow and steadyOne big spike
Stays liveIndefinitelyPage persists, feature is 24h
EffortA form eachWeeks of prep, a full launch day
RepeatableAny timeOnce per six months

Not an either/or. The launch gets you the audience, the listings get you the authority.

These are complements, not alternatives. The mistake is doing only the loud one. A launch is a day; listings keep working after the spike flattens. We maintain a breakdown of where to list a startup with the domain rating and link type for each, because that second column is the one that decides whether a submission was worth the ten minutes.

The one-line answer

Product Hunt is good for your startup and roughly neutral for your backlink profile. Launch for the people. Build the links somewhere else, and verify the rel attribute yourself before you trust anyone who tells you a listing is dofollow, including us.

FAQ

What does rel="ugc" mean for SEO?

The ugc attribute marks a link as user-generated content, meaning it was placed by a member of the public rather than vouched for by the site's editors. Google introduced it in 2019 alongside rel="sponsored", and since March 2020 treats ugc and nofollow as hints rather than strict directives. In practice you should assume a ugc link passes no ranking credit and be pleasantly surprised if it ever does.

Does a Product Hunt launch help my Google rankings at all?

Indirectly, yes. The link itself is not the mechanism. A launch sends real people to your site, and some of them write about you, list you, or link to you from their own sites, and those links are ordinary editorial links. Your Product Hunt listing page also ranks in Google in its own right, so it can occupy a result for your brand name and for 'alternative to' searches even though it does not feed your domain any authority.

Is Product Hunt worth it if I only care about SEO?

On its own, no. A launch is a full day of work and a lot of preparation for a link Google is told to discount. If search visibility is the only goal, the same effort spent getting listed on directories that do give dofollow links will move your domain rating further. Launch on Product Hunt for the audience, the feedback and the credibility, and treat any SEO effect as a bonus.

Do Product Hunt badges on my site pass link equity?

A Product Hunt badge is a link from your site to Product Hunt, not the other way around, so it does nothing for your own domain rating. It is social proof for your visitors. That is a fine reason to keep it, just not an SEO one.

Which startup directories actually give dofollow links?

Plenty of them, and the only reliable way to know is to inspect the rel attribute on a live listing the way we did here. Directory link policies change quietly and without announcement, which is exactly why we check rather than repeat what other guides say. Our own catalog covers directories in the DR 40 to 90 range and we verify the link type per directory.
