A US card with no add-ons. The fixed $0.30 weighs most on small payments: a $10 sale loses 5.90% to fees, a $1,000 sale 2.93%. The last column is what to charge so that the amount itself lands in your balance.

How Stripe calculates its fee
Stripe takes a percentage of each successful payment plus a fixed amount: 2.9% + $0.30 on a US card. Add-ons stack as extra percentages of the same amount: 1.5% for an international card, 1% when the currency has to be converted, 0.7% for Stripe Billing and 0.5% for Stripe Tax. Bank debits are priced differently: ACH costs 0.8% and never more than $5.00 on one payment, and SEPA Direct Debit a flat €0.35.
The fixed fee is why small payments cost the most: a $5 payment pays $0.45, 9.00% of the sale. The calculator rounds each fee to the cent, and your Stripe dashboard shows the exact fee on every payment.
How to pass Stripe fees on to customers
Work backwards from the amount you want to receive: charge = (amount you want + fixed fee) ÷ (1 - percentage fee). To receive $100 from a US card, charge ($100 + $0.30) ÷ 0.971 = $103.30. For a subscription on Stripe Billing, add its 0.7% to the percentage: $104.05 brings in $100 a month.
The “What to charge” mode at the top does the same for every country, card, bank debit and add-on, the ACH cap included. If you would rather show the fee as a separate line at checkout, check the surcharge rules where you sell first; building the fee into your price avoids the question.
Stripe vs PayPal vs Square fees
For a US business taking cards online, Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30 undercuts PayPal at every amount and matches the best online rate Square offers, which takes Square's API or a paid plan.
| US online card payment | Rate | Fee on $100 |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe | 2.9% + $0.30 | $3.20 |
| PayPal, standard card payments | 2.99% + $0.49 | $3.48 |
| PayPal Checkout | 3.49% + $0.49 | $3.98 |
| Square Online, Free plan | 3.3% + $0.30 | $3.60 |
| Square Online, Plus plan ($49 a month per location) | 2.9% + $0.30 | $3.20 |
| Square Online, Premium plan ($149 a month per location) | 2.9% + $0.30 | $3.20 |
| Square Online API, any plan | 2.9% + $0.30 | $3.20 |

FAQ
How much does Stripe charge per transaction?
On a US account, Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 for each successful domestic card payment, which is $3.20 on a $100 sale. International cards add 1.5% and currency conversion 1%, while ACH Direct Debit costs 0.8% with a $5.00 cap. UK accounts pay 1.5% + £0.20 on standard UK cards, euro area accounts 1.5% + €0.25 on standard EEA cards, Canadian accounts 2.9% + CA$0.30 and Australian accounts 1.65% + A$0.30 on domestic cards.
How much is the Stripe fee on $100?
$3.20 on a US domestic card at 2.9% + $0.30, so $96.80 reaches your Stripe balance. An international card raises it to $4.70, and currency conversion on top to $5.70. To receive the full $100 from a US card, charge $103.30.
Does Stripe charge a monthly fee?
No. On standard pricing Stripe charges no setup, monthly or closure fees, and the card fee applies only to successful payments. Optional products cost extra: Stripe Billing is 0.7% of billing volume on pay as you go, and Stripe Tax 0.5% per transaction where you're registered to collect tax.
What is Stripe's ACH fee?
ACH Direct Debit costs 0.8% per payment with standard settlement, capped at $5.00. Any payment of $625 or more pays exactly $5.00: on a $2,000 invoice that is 0.25%, against $58.30 by card.
How do I pass Stripe fees on to customers?
Raise the price so that what lands after the fee is the amount you wanted: charge = (amount you want + fixed fee) ÷ (1 - percentage fee). To receive $100 from a US card, charge ($100 + $0.30) ÷ 0.971 = $103.30. The “What to charge” mode above does this for any country, card and add-on. If you would rather add a separate card fee at checkout, check the surcharge rules where you sell first.
Does Stripe give its fees back when I refund a payment?
No. Refunding a card payment costs nothing extra, but Stripe keeps the processing and currency conversion fees from the original payment. Refund a $100 US card sale and the $3.20 fee stays with Stripe.
How much is a Stripe dispute fee?
$15.00 for each dispute a US account receives, plus another $15.00 for each one you respond to manually, which comes back if you win. UK accounts pay £20.00 for each of the two, euro area accounts €20.00, Canadian accounts CA$15.00 and Australian accounts A$25.00.
Does Stripe charge payout fees?
Not on the standard payout schedule: payouts to your bank account are free. Instant Payouts, which reach an eligible debit card or bank account within minutes, cost 1.5% of the payout on a US account, with a $0.50 minimum.
What does Stripe charge for subscriptions?
The card fee plus Stripe Billing, which costs 0.7% of billing volume on pay as you go. A $100 monthly plan paid by a US card costs $3.90 a month in fees, and to receive the full $100 you would charge $104.05.
Is Stripe cheaper than PayPal?
For US card payments, yes. Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30; PayPal charges 2.99% + $0.49 for standard card payments and 3.49% + $0.49 when the buyer pays through PayPal Checkout. On a $100 sale that is $3.20 on Stripe against $3.48 or $3.98 on PayPal. Both add 1.5% for international payments.
Is Stripe cheaper than Square?
Online, Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30 beats 3.3% + $0.30 on Square's free plan: $3.20 against $3.60 on $100. Square matches 2.9% + $0.30 on its Plus and Premium plans, at $49 and $149 a month per location, and through its Online API on any plan. In person the two come out even on $100: Square's free plan charges 2.6% + $0.15 and Stripe Terminal 2.7% + $0.05, $2.75 either way.
