Directory Backlinks in 2026: Which Ones Still Count

/9 min read

A directory backlink is the link from your listing on a directory to your own website. SEO directory submissions are easy to buy in bulk and hard to judge in bulk, because two listings on the same kind of site can end very differently: one in a followed link on an indexed page, the other in a button that runs through an address no crawler is allowed to follow.

So before you submit a website for backlinks anywhere, here are the four tests a directory link has to pass, read off the live listings of the directories in our catalog. Then the ones that pass, strongest first, followed by the 23 directories we added in October 2026.

Short version

A directory backlink counts when the link is followed and points at your domain, the listing page is indexed, the directory has real sites linking to it and the listing stays up. On badge directories that last test means the badge stays up, and 10 of the 11 followed directories in our table below ask for one or for a link back. Turbo0 charges $29.90 for one listing with its link back made optional; Submitator is $29 for 30 directories you pick, with every badge placed and kept live. The full catalog of 160+ is on our where-to-submit page.

Four tests a directory backlink has to pass

1. It is followed and points at your domain

Start with the rel attribute on the link to your site. A link with no rel, or with only noopener or noreferrer in it, is followed; nofollow, sponsored and ugc ask search engines not to pass ranking credit through it. Ahrefs, the source of the Domain Rating in our catalog, puts the consequence for its own metric in one line: "If a website is only linking to you via nofollow links, it won’t increase your DR."

Then read where the link goes. A clean rel on an anchor that points at the directory's own /go/ address, disallowed in its robots.txt, leaves no path a crawler may follow to you. Future Tools (DR 70) routes 79 of the 80 listings we read that way, as our guide to it says up front.

2. The listing page is indexed and something links to it

A followed link on a page that asks not to be indexed sits on a page search engines are told to leave out. Look in the head of your listing for a robots meta tag: Indie Hackers (DR 82) carried a noindex on 32 of the 78 product pages we read, and nofollow on all three of its links to the product. The other end of the scale is DeepLaunch (DR 72): 80 listing pages read, none noindexed, every one linking its tool followed.

Then ask how a crawler reaches the listing at all. LemonLaunch publishes no sitemap, and 232 of its 315 listing pages had no crawlable internal link pointing at them. On a directory like that, the badge on your own site is often the main way a crawler finds your listing, because it links straight to it: a badge is part of how the backlink gets found, not only the price of it.

3. The directory has links of its own

Domain Rating summarises the sites linking to a domain, so it describes the directory and not your listing. Read it beside the count it is built from, the referring domains: how many separate sites link in. Both tables below print the two together. And check whose domain the rating belongs to. Index by Dodo Payments shows DR 81 in our catalog, the rating of the payment company's domain, while Ahrefs counts 87 referring domains for the index itself. Its listings link out nofollow on 79 of the 80 we read.

Count what you buy in referring domains too. From the same Ahrefs explainer: "Only the first link from a domain will increase your DR. All subsequent links don’t affect your DR any further." A listing that links you three times is one referring domain. Thirty followed listings on thirty directories are thirty, which is why, for DR, the number of directories matters more than the number of links on any one of them.

4. It stays live

Badge directories make the followed link conditional on their badge or a link back on your site. CurlShip, which checks for its badge every hour, puts the rule in one sentence: "Free links are nofollow until you add the badge; paid tiers are dofollow with no badge." Its listings bear it out: all 94 free listings with the badge were followed, and all 3,356 without it were nofollow. On EasyLaunch, 373 of 387 listings were followed, and every one of the 14 nofollow ones belonged to a site without the badge.

Some directories take the listing down instead. On DodoDirectory removing the badge means "instant delisting", and AI Toolz Dir, one of our October additions, says "Listing stays permanent as long as the backlink remains on your site."

The directories put a price on the alternative themselves. Turbo0 (DR 81) sells a Basic plan at $29.90 that makes its link back optional and lists you at once. Twelve Tools (DR 83) asks "No badge space? Get listed with a paid submission" and charges $36 for it. AI Toolz Dir charges $25 to skip its link back, DodoDirectory $9.99 and CurlShip $1 a month or $30 once.

A badge is a few lines in your site's code that have to survive every redesign, for every directory that asked for one. Submitator carries that code for you. One component, installed once, renders the badge each of your directories asked for; we keep all of them live, and no directory ever costs you a commit.

Domain Rating by Ahrefs

DR is the figure our catalog carries, exported from our production database on 23 October 2026. Referring domains are Ahrefs' live count for each directory's host on 22 October 2026. The link column reads the rel attribute on each listing's link to the listed site, from our censuses of live listings: Startup Fame (47 free listings), Twelve Tools (44 free), Turbo0 (the 239 free listings among the 262 in its data) and DailyPings (all 589 on its browse page) in October 2026; DodoDirectory (all 255 listing pages) on 4 September; CurlShip (all 3,463 listing pages, of which 94 free ones carry its badge flag) on 25 September; EasyLaunch (all 387) on 28 September; LemonLaunch (all 315) on 10 October; PromoteProject (119 profiles, the 40 newest and 80 evenly spaced, 238 of 238 links), SaaSGrow (all 836; the other 15 are free listings marked without the badge, which show no link) and AI Toolz Dir (all 346 pages that load, 692 of 692 links) on 11 October 2026. The badge cell is the directory's own requirement as recorded in our catalog. Figures in the text come from our guides to each directory: Future Tools (80 of its 4,286 tool pages, 10 September 2026), Indie Hackers (78 product pages, 18 September 2026), DeepLaunch (80 of its 1,379 product pages) and Index by Dodo Payments (80 listings), both on 4 September 2026. Directory prices quoted in the text are each site's own pricing or submission page, read on 23 October 2026: Turbo0's Basic plan at $29.90 shown against $49.90, Twelve Tools Pro at $36, AI Toolz Dir's paid listing at $25, DodoDirectory Premium at $9.99 and CurlShip Bronze at $1 a month or $30 once (ex-VAT).

New in October 2026: 23 more directories

The directories we added to the catalog in October 2026, strongest first. AI Toolz Dir (DR 69) and Yo.directory (DR 69) lead the list: all 346 AI Toolz Dir listings that load link followed, and Yo.directory's free listing "Stays live while your link stays live". Of the newcomers, 5 have a guide of their own, and four of those link every listed product followed on the pages we read: AI Toolz Dir, ToolHunter, AZN8 and ThisTool.

Domain Rating by Ahrefs

The directories added to our production database in October 2026, from its export of 23 October 2026; every one is active. DR is our catalog's figure. Referring domains are Ahrefs' live count on 22 October 2026, and n/a marks the five added after that read: Yo.directory, SEO Listing, Tools & Agents, AI Compare Ninja and AIDIRECTORY. Link type is our admin's record, except where a guide measured the live listings: AI Toolz Dir (692 of 692 links followed, 11 October), ToolHunter (626 of 626, 1 October), AZN8 (242 of 242, 2 October), ThisTool (164 of 164 on 82 of its 109 pages, 2 October) and Round32, whose contenders' links appear only in a pop-up opened by a click, with no address of its own (2 October), which is why it reads no equity. A DR of 0 is Ahrefs' figure for the domain as our catalog records it. Yo.directory's line is quoted from its pricing page, read on 23 October 2026.

Checking a directory backlink yourself

  1. Open your live listing, find the link to your site and read two things on it: the rel attribute and the href. The href should be your own domain.
  2. If the href is an address on the directory's own site, open its robots.txt and look for a Disallow line covering that path.
  3. View the page source and search for noindex and for a canonical tag that points somewhere other than the listing itself.
  4. Run the directory's domain through our free DR checker for its Domain Rating, and read the number as a rating of the directory.
  5. After any redesign of your own site, check that every badge a directory asked for still renders and still links to your listing.

30 directories, every badge kept live

That last step is the one that slips, because it lives in your code rather than on the directory. With Submitator it is our step to keep. You choose the directories in the dashboard, Domain Rating on screen for every one; we write each of them a unique description, put every badge and link back on your site and keep all of them live. Most directories are delivered in 24 to 48 hours, every directory within 21 days at most. If a directory rejects a submission, we add one more directory to your selection so you can pick a replacement.

The full catalog table on our where-to-submit page carries the whole list, 160+ directories, with the DR, the link type and the badge rule of each. Two shorter cuts of it serve one kind of product each: AI tool directories and SaaS directories.

30 directories for $29, badges kept live

Turbo0 alone charges $29.90 to make its link back optional. You pick from 160+; 60 for $49, 100 for $79, one-time.

FAQ

What is a directory backlink?

A link to your website from the listing a directory publishes about it, often a Visit button beside the name. It counts for SEO when the link is followed and points at your domain, when the listing page is indexed and when the listing stays up, which on badge directories means the badge stays up on your site.

Is a directory backlink behind a redirect still a backlink?

Only if a crawler may follow the redirect to your domain. Some directories send the Visit button through an internal /go/ address that their own robots.txt disallows, and then no crawlable followed path reaches your site, whatever rel the anchor carries. Hover the button on your live listing: if the address is the directory's own, read its robots.txt for that path.

Does a directory backlink count if the listing page is noindexed?

Treat it as a weak one. A robots noindex asks search engines to keep the page out of their index, so a followed link on it is worth little however strong the directory. On Indie Hackers, 32 of the 78 product pages we read carried one. Search the source of your listing for noindex before you count it.

How many referring domains does one directory listing give me?

One per directory. A listing that links you from its title and again from its Visit button still adds a single referring domain, and Ahrefs, whose Domain Rating our catalog prints, counts only the first link from a domain toward DR. Thirty followed listings on thirty different directories add thirty.

What should I check when buying directory backlinks?

That the seller names every directory, with its Domain Rating and the link type it gives, so you can run the checks in this post on any of them. Submitator's catalog of 160+ is public, with the DR, link type and badge rule of each. You choose your directories from it in the dashboard, and installing the badges and keeping them live is our job. It costs $29 for 30, $49 for 60 or $79 for 100, one-time.
