The BetterLaunch Alternative: You Do the Hand-Picking

BetterLaunch pricing: three times our rate at the same sixty

$149 buys "60+ high-DR directories". At the sixty that tier commits to, that is $2.48 a directory, against about 82 cents on our $49 plan for sixty: the same count, about three times the price. The $199 tier promises "120+", and at the hundred and twenty it commits to that is $1.66 each, against $0.79 on our $79 plan for a hundred. Both prices sit next to struck-through $200 and $250 anchors, and we found no archived or crawled copy of any Better Launch page where either anchor was the amount actually charged. What we did find is movement in the other direction: a June 7, 2026 crawl of their pricing page sold "60+ Directories" at $139 and "100+ Directories" at $179. Seven weeks later the sell prices are $149 and $199, the tier is renamed "120+" and the two anchors have not moved.

They hand-pick, and the lineup "may vary a bit"

Each tier names a few directories, then walks it back. The $149 card says "Including SourceForge, StackShare, SaaSHub and more"; the $199 card says "Including CrunchBase, G2, GeekWire, SourceForge and more". Next to both sits a tooltip you have to hover to read: "These are just a few examples to give you an idea! We'll hand-pick the best directories that match your product's category and audience, so the exact lineup may vary a bit." So seven name slots across two tiers, none of them committed. Five of the seven are labelled Nofollow in Better Launch's own list, and GeekWire is labelled Paid. None of that is hidden, and to their credit their FAQ says so out loud: "It varies. Each row shows whether the directory link is Dofollow or Nofollow." The gap is not disclosure. It is that the labels are on a list you cannot order from.

A labelled list, and what is actually in it

The 297 rows were free to browse when we checked in July 2026, and the stated quality floor holds: nothing in the list sits below DR 20, which is more discipline than most competitors show. It is also broader than "startup directories" implies. By our count 54 of the 297 are not startup, software or AI directories at all, and 41 of those are generic business and local-listing sites: Manta, MerchantCircle, HotFrog, Brownbook, Cybo, n49, Place123, A-zbusinessfinder, Active Search Results and SubmissionWebDirectory among them, alongside Indiegogo, the Etherscan directory and AppSumo. One row, listed as "Aitools.Neilpatel" at DR 91 with a Dofollow label, resolves to app.neilpatel.com/en/apps-integrations, titled "Apps & Integrations | Ubersuggest". Those are all real pages with real DR. Whether a general local-business listing belongs in your sixty is a judgement call, and on their service it is not yours to make.

They run a badge gate. They never mention badges.

Better Launch runs a badge mechanic of its own. Its free listing note reads: "The backlink on the Free plan is nofollow — make it dofollow by adding the BetterLaunch badge to your website or by winning the week", and both paid launch tiers sell "No badge verification required" as a feature. On the submission service, the word badge did not appear anywhere when we checked in July 2026. We looked at the directory page, the pricing page, the Terms, the homepage, the submit page and 45 of the site's JavaScript bundles, and found no statement about the directories that ask for a badge on your site, and none about whether those directories are covered. It matters because 63 rows in their own list are marked Freemium, and free tiers are where badge gating lives. Several of the strongest free dofollow startup listings are badge-gated: Startup Fame (DR 83), Fazier (DR 81) and Turbo0 (DR 79). Submitator installs one badge component once, keeps every directory's badge live and offers an invisible option, so those doors open on every plan, the $29 one included.

"All payments are final", in Terms dated before any archived copy of the product

There is no refund on offer. The directory page carries no refund, guarantee or money-back wording at all, and the only refund clause anywhere on the site reads: "No Refunds: All payments are final and non-refundable. By subscribing to a paid plan, you acknowledge and agree that no refunds will be issued, including for partial billing periods or unused features." That clause sits in a section whose lead sentence names something else entirely, "Better Launch offers paid subscription plans (Starter and Growth)", and it talks about billing periods and cancellation on products the pricing page sells as one-time. The Terms are dated "Last updated: April 15, 2026", and the earliest copy of the directory packages we could find anywhere is a June 7, 2026 crawl, so the payment terms are dated earlier than any copy of the thing they now have to govern.

The one outcome the $199 card sells, disclaimed in the same paperwork

The bigger package carries a bullet the cheaper one does not: "Targeted DR lift to 15+ in 60 days (best-effort)". Their Terms answer it directly: "We do not guarantee any specific SEO outcomes, search engine rankings, or domain authority improvements resulting from backlinks". The hedge in brackets is theirs and it is the honest thing to write, so this is not a broken promise. It is just a number on a sales card with nothing behind it, on a purchase the same document says is final.

That is their FAQ answering whether submission is manual, and the answer continues: "Automated and bulk directory submission tools blast low-quality links that Google ignores or penalizes. We submit each listing individually so it sticks, then send you proof of every live listing." We are automation and we say so. The distinction that matters is one their own page already makes elsewhere: its answer on whether directory submission still works says it "only backfires when you spam low-quality link farms", which is a statement about where you submit, not about what fills the form. Submitator runs a real browser session per directory: it completes CAPTCHAs and email verification, writes a description for that directory rather than pasting one everywhere and submits to named startup directories you picked from a catalog with a DR next to each. The volume argument cuts the same way for both of us, and it is one Better Launch makes well: "Quality beats volume."

When BetterLaunch might fit

To be fair: this is one of the more honest storefronts we have reviewed. The operator is named and real, "Digitonica SRL, a company registered in Romania", with Romanian law and jurisdiction written down. The 297-directory list is public, free and labelled row by row with DR and follow status, the nofollow rows included (one row of the 297 is labelled Unknown), and the DR-20 floor it claims is one it actually keeps. There is no countdown, no spots-left counter and no invented testimonial anywhere on the site. The service promises screenshots and listing links in a dashboard, which is real proof, not a status email. If you would rather hand the whole job to someone else, want no part in choosing and would also like a launch slot on their own platform in the same checkout (DR 57 per FrogDR in July 2026, DR 58 by their own count), the $219 bundle is a reasonable way to buy that. Submitator is the better fit when you want the sixty or the hundred to be yours, want the badge-gated directories opened rather than left unmentioned and want a refund policy that exists.
